Broomfield House Mural

One of the first projects delivered as part of Enfield Council's National Lottery Heritage Fund Programme, "Unlocking Broomfield Park for the Community”, is a Mural on the hoarding surrounding Broomfield House.

The Mural is part of the work to explore the local history and engage the local community with the heriitage of the house and the park. Enfield Council commissioned The Matchbox Collective to create the Mural. Matchbox is made up of some of the best mural, street art and sign writing talent. They bring together artists to create a supportive community, and tell genuine stories through public art. Five artists have worked alongside local students from Laurel Park school and each has taken on different historical periods to jointly tell the story of Broomfield park in a creative timeline from prehistoric times to the present day ... and into the future!

Broomfield Park Muralist Bec Dennison

Bec Dennison - Roman and Anglo Saxon era

Bec is a London based illustrator, artist and muralist. Bec’s art contains a dark, dream-like quality that is rooted in the rawness of our inner worlds and what it is to be human.

Influenced by rock music and tattoo culture, her artwork makes use of exaggerated light, shadows, layers and texture.

Bec’s section is a fantastical interpretation of the Roman occupation of Britain, showing a chariot drawn by golden lions, and Juno, queen of heaven.

The other side of Bec’s section depicts the Anglo-Saxon era. Laurel park students talked a lot about swords and Bec has shown the forging of a sword.

Broomfield Park Muralist Shio

Shio - Georgian to Edwardian

An illustrator and muralist from Japan, currently based in London. With a background in architecture, urban planning and urban design, she loves observing the relationship and interaction between people and the cities they inhabit.

This section ilustrates  Georgian times to early 20th Century. Shio’s section shows  murals being painted inside Broomfield House by Gerard Lanscroon (about 1725).

In 1903, the land was purchased by Southgate Urban District Council to create a public park. Broomfield House has had many uses over the years: a temporary schoo; a maternity centre, and a dental clinic. In 1925, the House and Museum opened to the public. It became a much-loved local attraction and remained popular throughout most of the 20th century. Many people still have fond memories of visiting it.
