Horticulture volunteers restoring beds & borders
A dedicated team of volunteers has made a huge difference in the park in recent years. Continuing from the fantastic achievement in the Conservatory, amazing amounts of work have gone in to bringing back to life the various flower borders and beds in the park.
This has involved careful planning, research and local consultation by the Horicultural Team led by Elizabeth Dobbie and Vic Black. We have established a regular and engaged volunteer group, on Wednesdays, who seem to both enjoy and take pride in their considerable achievements. We hope to work alongside the newly established Enfield Council Parks Management Team and gardeners to develop and maintain the Historic Walled Garden Flower Beds in the coming years.

1-9 Flower Beds and Borders
What are we doing? - a planting plan
1 'Shell' Bed - Complement the purple foliage shrubs behind the shell with some low growing colour in front.

'Mediterranean' bed - A south facing border to make a statement on entering the large white park gates.
Colourful summer planting punctuated by structural species.
3 'Gazebo' beds - Retain current style by renovation and pruning of existing plants. Add plants to give symmetry to two halves of the border. Add coloured stems for winter complementing the current evergreen planting. A magnolia and orange blossom have recently been added as part of the FoBP Tree Project.
4 East Lawn: Three multistemmed trees from the FoBP Tree Project have recently been planted to give autumn colour .
5 House Frontage
- In the 1930’s and 1940’s this was planted with Dahlias
- plan to incorporate them into a modern planting scheme.
6 Sensory Garden - and
7 - Oblong Shrub Beds -
Give better light by reducing or removing climbers on the wall. Renovate the beds by removal of inappropriate species, pruning and some new planting.
8 Rose Bed: Currently very well tended and is thriving
9 Long Border: Remodelling well underway. Continue
to augment current planting with robust herbaceous perennials to extend season of interest .
10 Horseshoe: Successful spring planting of tulips and forget-me-nots to be followed by summer bedding. Bring the mown grass much nearer to the front of the horseshoe; remove the existing overgrown plants and circle the brick edging with a lavender hedge so the display can be seen from the path.
11 - Memorial Garden: Under plant rose beds and replace tired lavender hedge . Deceased box bushes to be replaced with other evergreen shrubs
