 Meet in the Growing Space

TIME: 10.00 TO 13.00
ACTIVITY: TO INCLUDE - CLEARING WEEDS, CONSTRUCTING RIASED PLANTING BEDS, SUPERVISING COMMUNITY REPARATION WORKERS.

COME WITH: WORK CLOTHES, SUITABLE BOOTS.

Help create and maintain a community growing area which may be used by the park community, school and other groups (eg Enfield Mencap) to learn and grow food crops.

The new growing space is situated behind the Community Orchard in the area between the Wildlife Pond and Netball Courts. The plan is to create multiple raised planting beds arranged in a semi-circle around a central paved area with a cherry tree as a focal point. These will be planted with crops of herbs, runner beans, tomatoes, berries and other food products. The food products may be shared by the growers or used in events in the Orchard or in the Greenery café. We would like to involve members of the local park community in learning and helping others to learn about sowing, planting, growing and maintaining food crops. This may involve families with children, local school groups and other groups such as the Enfield Mencap for young adults with learning disability and the Youth/School support programme (Reach) for 13/14year olds from local schools.

The work will involve clearing the area of weeds, brambles and long grass and creating composting areas. Building the raised planters and paved area, transporting soil and filling the planters before sowing or planting. For those who would like to there is a role in supporting and supervising Community Reparation workers who are working with us and can benefit from learning to work with other people and learn new skills and abilities.
